Application of hot glue in bookbinding

With the increasing awareness of environmental protection and health, society is no longer only concerned with the functionality and application of adhesives. The requirements for the environmental protection of adhesives become more and more stringent. It is imperative to develop environmentally friendly green adhesives that meet the three major requirements of "environmental protection, health, and safety". As people's living standards continue to improve, especially in Europe and America, people's pursuit of printing products tends to be fashionable, novel, and personalized, which makes the production process more and more complicated and the product quality requirements higher. Hot glue adhesives, as a new type of adhesive, have characteristics such as no solvent volatilization, heat resistance, cold resistance, solvent resistance, fatigue resistance, etc., which meet the needs of current social development.

In the printing and packaging industry, hot glue is used for bookbinding

Plastic-plastic and paper-plastic composite, plastic box manufacturing, and other aspects. Hot glue is a pre-polymer with active terminal groups. For printing paper, when the active terminal groups are exposed to moist air or when the paper reaches a certain humidity, cross-linking reaction occurs. After the pre-polymer is moistened, it can penetrate into the paper well, react with the fiber molecules in the paper, and achieve high viscosity and high paper tensile strength. In the past 20 years, thanks to the development of wireless binding technology, the application of hot glue book binding has grown rapidly.

EVA hot melt has good adhesion and elasticity

Currently, most of the bookbinding hot glue on the market are EVA hot melt. However, EVA-type hot melt is expensive and has disadvantages such as memory, so when you want to open a book, it tends to close. When you want to close it, it tends to open, and grooves or sudden closure may form at the binding of the book when it is being read. Polyurethane hot glue has a simple production process, low cost, and can compensate for the above defects. The adhesive has good elasticity and toughness, high bonding strength, can be repeatedly melted and used, has a high product utilization rate, and has broad application prospects.

The main application advantages of hot glue

As one of the professional hot melt glue suppliers, we offer high-quality hot glue book binding which is fast curing, easy to use, low spraying temperature, impact resistance, fatigue resistance, good flatness, durability, strong adhesive force, and environmental protection compared to traditional EVA hot melt in bookbinding applications.

For post-press bookbinding, the strength of hot melt bookbinding can reach the strength of ordinary EVA hot melt nail binding after 6 hours, and the strongest bonding effect can be achieved after 48 hours. The differences in surface properties of coated paper, ink, varnish, UV-cured layer, and plastic film have little effect on the bookbinding properties of hot glue. Compared with traditional EVA adhesive, the results of functional tests (such as book page pulling and page peeling tests) for finished products will be more than 60% higher.

The traditional EVA hot melt spraying temperature for bookbinding is about 160-180℃, while the hot glue spraying temperature is lower, only 120-150℃, which is very suitable for applications of materials that are sensitive to high temperature and easy to deform, saving energy and increasing operation safety for workers. For thick flat books, traditional EVA hot melt  requires locking thread processing for the books, while hot glue can reduce this process, save costs, and shorten the production cycle.

The hot glue layer of hot melt bookbinding is soft, which makes turning and folding of the book very convenient. As a crosslinked compound, it has excellent performance in shock vibration resistance and fatigue resistance. For some books that require flatness after being used for a long time, such as reference books, manuals, textbooks, and cookbooks, hot glue binding is undoubtedly the best choice. Because the chemical cross-linking reaction of hot glue makes it have excellent bonding properties such as high heat resistance, low-temperature resistance, solvent resistance, and water resistance, hot melt bookbinding can completely meet the requirements of long-term preservation books such as photo albums, picture yearbooks, high-end cultural relics calligraphy and painting books, and Bibles.
